Part 1 of the handbook opens with three separate stories, and this lesson's job is to keep them apart: how long Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have been here, when European settlement began, and how the colonies became one nation. It closes with what the handbook does — and does not — say about Australia becoming a multicultural nation.
